Commission work is very personal and emotional. I have a very simple process of doing commission work. Here are some guidelines:
Abstract expressions vs. dog portraits
As you can see in my work, these aren’t typical dog portraits. I paint the emotional expression of how dogs make us feel. And I do this through gestural abstracts of color. So, if you are looking for a traditional portrait painting of your lovable dog, my abstracts may not be what you are looking for. There are many incredible artists out there who do beautiful, traditional dog portraits. But if you are looking for an abstract expression of your dog, please see below.
Optional special abstract scenarios: The story behind the bond
While I love painting the soulful, up-close expressions of dogs, I am equally inspired by the unique, everyday rituals you share with them. I want to paint the story of that specific moment that is entirely exclusive to your bond. This isn't just a portrait of your dog; it is a scenario-based abstract capturing their quirky habits, your shared routines, or those fleeting "in-between" moments that make you smile. So the dog isn’t so centralized and largely taking up the composition, the dog is part of the overall special compositional story. Here are a few examples: The hunt, Stay at home buddies, Leo, Cruisin, American Barkic.
Whether it is the moment they wake you up by planting both paws directly on your head, the chaos they cause by stealing golf balls off the fairway, or the way they always ride with exactly one paw draped out the passenger window—these are the narratives I want to bring to life through vibrant color and flattened, modernist perspective. If you want to capture a specific memory or scenario rather than a traditional close-up, tell me your story below.
The materials and size
Primarily, I use acrylics on panel or canvas. The size of the work plays an important role in the expression. You can see samples of the commissioned work by clicking on the small images to the right.
The process
The process is quite simple. We start by you sending me pictures that capture the essence of your lovable dog the best (his/her expression and any unique features). From this I would review and think through an overall expression and propose an overall composition, recommended size, the cost and timing. If you agree to the proposal, then off we go! When the painting is complete, I send you pictures for your review.
