PYHaS2021 Course Dog

My intention is to convey the ceaseless energy, wit, and vivacity of the Jack Russell breed, challenging the traditional confines of dog portraiture. I wanted to break through the two-dimensional limitations of canvas, venturing into the realm of sensation and emotion, a testament to the notion that artistry is not bound to literal representation.

Harnessing the dynamism of abstract expressionism and Rayonism, I sought to capture not only the visual, but also the essence of this spirited breed. With rich blues and browns forming a deep, evocative base layer, I intended to represent the intrinsic depth of the canine spirit, while the metallic wash overlays playfully flirt with light, embodying the radiance and zest for life that Jack Russells are known for.

Through the process of sgrafitto, the scratching away of layers to reveal the underpainting, I captured the spontaneous, playful personality of the breed. This is a metaphor for the process of discovery, of seeing beyond the surface, much like uncovering the hidden depths and character of a Jack Russell.

The name "Course Dog" speaks to the journey of creating this piece. Not only is it a reflection of the specific context of an online demonstration class, it also signifies the constant pursuit of exploration and growth, navigating through the course of artistic expression and interpretation.

Through "Course Dog," I invite viewers to journey with me, to perceive this familiar breed through an entirely new lens of color, form, and emotion. In this realm, we are not merely observers but active participants in the vibrant dance of creation.
